Detailed description

Atopic eczema is a very common disease that most often occurs in newborns and young children. It should be emphasized that even the most effective drugs cannot eliminate the inborn tendency to the disease, which lasts a lifetime. However, it is possible to ward off the symptoms of the disease and thus bring the course of eczema under control with honest adherence to preventive and treatment measures. The long-term management of atopic dermatitis therefore includes prevention with regular measures, regular and individual skin care and good cooperation between the patient and his doctor. A fundamental prerequisite for the success of the therapy is the detailed education of the patient, or his entire family. The interdisciplinary cooperation of a general practitioner, dermatologist, allergist, clinical immunologist and, if necessary, a psychologist and a teacher is very important.

Atopic eczema (AE) (syn. atopic dermatitis, prurigo Besnier, neurodermatitis atopica) is a multifactorial non-infectious inflammatory skin disease of a chronically recurring nature. It is a predominantly childhood disease, but it also occurs in adult patients. From a clinical point of view, a triad of manifestations is characteristic: dermatitis, serosis and pruritus. The clinical picture is very variable and changes depending on the age of the patient.

AE is a disease mainly of infancy and childhood. Poor prognostic indicators include: a positive family history, a severe course of AE in childhood and the presence of respiratory atopy, high IgE values in umbilical cord blood, and a null allele of the filaggrin gene. In some patients, AE may occur in adulthood.

Children with AE are very susceptible to skin infections of various types. The most common are bacterial infections, which are mostly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The source can be the child with a cold himself or anyone from his surroundings. It is advisable to swab the nose and eliminate any positive findings. It is advisable to swab the nose and eliminate any positive findings. Infection with the herpes simplex virus is very dangerous. It can cause a serious condition with fevers. Immediate antiviral treatment is required. People who have herpes should not be in contact with a child with eczema. If a child with AE gets herpes himself, it is necessary to treat him immediately. Children with AE have warts and molluscs more often. Treatment is often difficult and lengthy as in healthy children.
